The Health Ministry announced yesterday (11) that about 84% of people in Sri Lanka are willing to donate their eyes. They stated that the National Eye Bank, which was set up 15 years ago, has collected around 17,000 corneas. These have been used in roughly 12,000 corneal transplant surgeries. Additionally, between 4,000 and 5,000 corneas have been sent to other countries due to international requests. The Ministry emphasized that the National Eye Bank is recognized worldwide, with ongoing requests for corneas from various nations, including Singapore, South Africa, and other countries in Asia.
