Showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western provinces and in Galle and Matara districts.
The Department of Meteorology issued this weather forecast on May 8, 2026, at 5:30 a.m. They noted that a low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka will keep the showery weather going for several days. Misty conditions may occur in the early morning hours in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, along with the Kurunegala district. During the morning, showers are possible in the Eastern and Northern provinces. After 1:00 p.m., most areas of the island can expect showers or thundershowers. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risks from sudden strong winds and lightning during these thundershowers. The heat index is likely to rise to the ‘Caution level’ during the day in Sabaragamuwa, Northern, North-central, North-western, Eastern provinces, and in Hambantota and Monaragala districts. Additionally, rainfall above 75 mm may occur in some locations in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, Southern, and North-central provinces. A warm weather advisory was released by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre on May 7, 2026, at 3:30 p.m., valid for May 8, 2026. The heat index reflects the temperature felt by the human body, which may reach the ‘Caution level’ in certain areas during the day. This index is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature, but it does not predict maximum temperature. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology based on global weather prediction models. The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services has advised on the effects of the heat index on the human body. For job sites: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade. Indoors: Check on the elderly and sick. Vehicles: Never leave children alone. Outdoors: Limit strenuous activities, seek shade, and keep hydrated. Dress in lightweight, light-colored clothing.
