The Supreme Court of Sri Lanka instructed the petitioners to take action to reissue a notice to former President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. He is a respondent in a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition. This petition seeks an order to recover compensation funds that were allegedly paid unlawfully to former ministers and Members of Parliament. These payments were made for houses that were either set on fire or damaged during the nationwide unrest that followed the attack on the “Aragalaya” protest site on May 9, 2022. The Supreme Court made this ruling during the hearing of the FR petition, which argues that the compensation payments were illegal, according to a report from Ada Derana.
