Heavy showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva and North-central provinces.
The Department of Meteorology released a weather forecast on 06 May 2026 at 5:30 a.m. It states that the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is affecting the weather and a low-level atmospheric disturbance may develop near the island. As a result, rainfall is anticipated to increase from today (06) and continue for the next few days. In the early morning, misty conditions could appear in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces. Showers are likely in the Southern and Eastern provinces during the morning hours. After 1:00 p.m., most areas of the island can expect showers or thundershowers. The public is urged to take precautions to reduce risks from temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. The weather forecast from 05 May 2026, also issued at 5:30 a.m. by the Department of Meteorology, noted that the ITCZ influences the island's weather. This will lead to more rainfall after 6 May. In the early morning, mist may be seen in parts of the Central and Uva provinces and in the Ampara district. Cloudy skies are expected over the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Southern, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Ampara district, with morning showers likely in these areas. After 1:00 p.m., showers or thundershowers will be widespread across the island. Fairly heavy rainfall above 50 mm is expected in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Uva, and Eastern provinces, as well as in the Galle, Matara, and Polonnaruwa districts. Winds may reach speeds of 30-40 km/h at times in the Northern and North-central provinces and in the Hambantota district. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to minimize damage from strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. A previous weather forecast was also issued on 04 May 2026 at 5:30 a.m. by the Department of Meteorology.
