Cricket and the National Interest

Eran Wickremaratne, now part of this committee, is a professional administrator known for his integrity and financial expertise. He is one of the few ministers without corruption allegations from the past government. Alongside him are renowned former cricketers like Kumar Sangakkara, Roshan Mahanama, and Sidath Wettimuny, as well as professionals with legal and business expertise. Their role is to implement structural reforms and enhance transparency and accountability in cricket administration. Additionally, this appointment marks a significant moment as it shows the NPP government reaching out to someone linked to the opposition for help in a matter of national significance. Bipartisanship has been a key demand from civic groups and political analysts who believe the government should include more diverse voices in decision-making roles. Historically, the NPP government has mainly appointed individuals from within its party or those loyal to it, often overlooking qualified candidates. This new approach could signal a meaningful change. In areas of public life, especially in beloved sports like cricket, national interest should take precedence over party politics. Sri Lanka cannot afford to treat every institution as a battleground for political rivalry when many are in crisis and public confidence is low. It is regrettable that some opposition members reacted negatively to the government’s decision to include outside expertise in cricket administration. The SJB, the party of the newly appointed chairman, has expressed concerns that politicians should not be involved in sports administration and has urged him to resign from the party. It is essential to differentiate between political control and the temporary use of capable administrators for reform. In other countries, individuals in politics often engage in academia and civil society temporarily, and vice versa. More troubling is the recent campaign against the new cricket committee and its chairman based on their religious background. This attitude disregards the reality of Sri Lanka’s diverse, multi-ethnic, and multi-religious society. The interim committee reflects this diversity fairly well. Given the country’s history of ethnic conflict, political leaders should be cautious about using communal prejudice for short-term political gain. Sri Lanka has suffered greatly from years of mistrust and division. The current government aims to move away from the sectarian language used by previous administrations. They have repeatedly pledged to uphold the equal rights of all citizens and prevent any form of discrimination or extremism. The recent international peace march in Sri Lanka, led by Venerable Bhikkhu Thich Paññākāra from Vietnam, emphasized kindness and mindfulness and resonated with many, as seen in the crowds that showed their support.
