'Free Lawyers' gained attention recently for uncovering the theft of $2.5 million from the Treasury. In response to inquiries, Tennakoon revealed that Maithri Gunaratne, PC, on behalf of 'Free Lawyers,' wrote to both Chief Justice Surasena and Rajeev Amarasuriya, the President of the Bar Association, on April 4. They claimed that President Dissanayake's announcement severely undermined judicial independence and raised concerns about the judgement expected on May 25. The organization has asked the Chief Justice to look into whether political pressure affected the judicial process. Tennakoon mentioned that they expect the Bar Association to clarify its position on the President's comments. He noted that in his May Day speech, President Dissanayake referenced 15 cases scheduled for this month, while Bimal Rathnayake, the Minister of Transport, Highways and Urban Development and Leader of the House, mentioned about 10 names of current and former politicians who would be summoned starting in May. Tennakoon argued that the NPP seemed to use May Day to respond to increasing allegations regarding the Colombo port container issue, the coal scam, the Rs 13.2 billion NDB fraud, and the theft of $2.5 million from the Treasury and $625,000 from the Sri Lanka Postal Service.
