The Department of Meteorology issued this weather forecast on May 4, 2026, at 5:30 AM. Early in the morning, misty conditions may occur in certain areas of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, along with the Ampara district. Coastal regions of the Western province, along with Galle and Matara districts, are likely to see showers in the morning. Following 2:00 PM, showers or thundershowers are expected in several locations across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, and Eastern provinces, including Polonnaruwa, Galle, and Matara. Some areas in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces, as well as in Galle and Matara, may experience fairly heavy rainfall exceeding 50 mm. Additionally, strong winds of 30 to 40 km/h can be expected at times in the Northern and North-central provinces and in Hambantota district. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce risks from temporary strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. During the daytime, the Heat Index is at a Caution Level in the Northern, North-central, Eastern, Sabaragamuwa, and North-western provinces, along with Colombo, Gampaha, Hambantota, and Monaragala districts. A Warm Weather Advisory was issued by the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre on May 3, 2026, at 3:30 PM, valid for May 4, 2026. The Heat Index, which reflects how temperature is felt on the human body, may rise to a ‘Caution Level’ in certain areas mentioned above during the day. This Heat Index forecast is based on relative humidity and maximum temperature and is not the same as the maximum temperature prediction. It is created by the Department of Meteorology for the next day using global numerical weather prediction models. The effects of the heat index on the human body are outlined in a table prepared with guidance from the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services. Recommended actions include: - On job sites: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade frequently. - Indoors: Check on the elderly and those who are unwell. - In vehicles: Never leave children unattended. - Outdoors: Limit intense activities, seek shade, and stay hydrated. - Dressing: Wear lightweight and light-colored clothes. Please also refer to advisories from the Disaster Preparedness & Response Division of the Ministry of Health for additional information. For more details, contact 011-7446491.
