Showers or thundershowers will occur in most parts of the island after 1.00 pm
Issued at 05:30 a.m. on 29 April 2026 by the Department of Meteorology In the early morning, misty conditions are expected in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, North-central, and Uva provinces, as well as in the Kurunegala district. During the morning, some areas in the Southern province may experience showers. After 1:00 pm, showers or thundershowers are predicted for most regions across the island. Heavy rainfall of over 50 mm is anticipated in certain areas of the Northern, North-central, Central, and Sabaragamuwa provinces, along with the Kurunegala and Trincomalee districts. The public is advised to take necessary precautions to reduce the risk of damage from localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers. The Heat Index is expected to reach Caution Level in the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Kegalle, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa districts during the daytime. Showers exceeding 75 mm may occur in parts of the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, North-western, North-central, and Southern provinces, along with the Mannar district. The Heat Index, which reflects how temperature feels to the human body, is likely to rise to 'Caution Level' in some areas of the Northern, North-central, and North-western provinces, as well as in Kegalle, Trincomalee, and Batticaloa districts during the day. This Heat Index Forecast is calculated using relative humidity and maximum temperature, indicating what is felt on the body, rather than the maximum temperature itself. It is generated by the Department of Meteorology based on global numerical weather prediction data. The Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services has provided guidance on the heat index's effects on the human body. ACTION REQUIRED Job sites: Stay hydrated and take breaks in the shade frequently. Indoors: Check on the elderly and those who are sick. Vehicles: Never leave children unattended. Outdoors: Limit heavy activities, seek shade, and stay hydrated. Dress: Wear lightweight and light-colored clothing.
