A team from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) met with the Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and party leaders in Parliament to discuss important matters ahead of the upcoming IMF Fifth and Sixth Review Mission, which is set to take place from March 26 to April 8, 2026. The delegation included Mr. Evan Papageorgiou, the Deputy Division Chief, along with other senior economists from the IMF. During the meeting with Speaker Dr. Jagath Wickramaratne, he expressed gratitude for the IMF's ongoing support for Sri Lanka as it works on its economic recovery. He pointed out that the Tenth Parliament is strong and inclusive, with a two-thirds majority that reflects the country’s diversity, including representation for people with disabilities, according to the statement. The Speaker reaffirmed Sri Lanka’s commitment to the IMF’s Extended Fund Facility (EFF) program and stressed the need to maintain sound monetary and fiscal policies. He mentioned important legislative actions, such as the Public Financial Management Act and the Anti-Corruption Act, highlighting their role in ensuring fiscal discipline and good governance. The discussion also focused on improving public financial transparency and implementing strong measures against bribery and corruption. Additionally, the Speaker shared plans to create a Parliamentary Study Centre to help build the skills of Members of Parliament and local government officials. He requested the IMF's support for these capacity-building efforts. Mr. Papageorgiou remarked that Sri Lanka is performing well under the EFF program, suggesting that the country is on a positive economic path. He stressed that Parliament plays a vital role in overseeing legislation and policies, urging continued support to maintain the momentum of reforms.
