Electricity tariffs increased with effect from April 1
The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has approved an increase in electricity tariffs starting April 1. In February, the Ceylon Electricity Board requested a 13.56% rise in tariffs for the second quarter of this year. The new changes will affect domestic consumers, but the PUCSL has decided not to raise tariffs for religious and charitable organizations that use less than 180 units per month. Instead, a 9.6% increase will apply to consumption above 180 units in those sectors. For general and household consumers, tariffs will rise by 8%. The industrial sector will see a smaller increase of 8.7%, while government institutions will face a 14.4% hike in electricity costs. Additionally, the PUCSL plans to introduce a new tariff category specifically for Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Stations to encourage the use of EVs and manage demand during peak times. The commission held several public consultations to gather feedback from stakeholders regarding the proposed second electricity tariff revision for 2026.
