Suspect arrested over illegally obtaining fuel by overriding QR code
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has detained a suspect in Nittambuwa for allegedly acquiring fuel by manipulating a QR code associated with someone else's vehicle. Investigators found that the suspect changed the QR code of a woman’s car and created a new one using the car's information to fraudulently get fuel. The inquiry began after the Ministry of Digital Economy received a complaint through the '1919' hotline. Following this, the Cybercrime Surveillance Unit of the Computer Crime Investigation Division (CCID) under the CID took over the investigation, resulting in the suspect's arrest. Officials have identified the suspect as a resident of Piliyandala. Authorities also mentioned that they are looking into others who might have helped issue fuel using the fake QR code created by the suspect. The CID added that they are conducting special investigations into similar cases where people override QR codes to illegally obtain fuel.
