China vows stronger law enforcement cooperation with Sri Lanka to curb online fraud
China has reiterated its strong determination to fight against telecommunications and online fraud, promising to enhance cooperation with Sri Lanka's law enforcement. In a recent statement, China mentioned that it is paying close attention to reports of Sri Lankan authorities detaining several foreign suspects in online fraud cases, including individuals from China. The statement highlighted that these crimes cause serious harm and expressed full support for Sri Lanka in taking strong action against the suspects, while also safeguarding their lawful rights according to legal standards. China noted the rapid growth of telecommunications and online fraud worldwide, which poses a significant threat. In recent years, China has worked closely with various nations, such as Myanmar, Cambodia, and the United Arab Emirates, to combat these crimes. Many criminal gangs have been dismantled, achieving notable results, but some have relocated to nearby countries in Southeast Asia, according to the statement. Additionally, it pointed out that Sri Lanka's advanced telecommunications system, its strategic location, more relaxed visa rules, and its welcoming people have made it appealing to some international fraud rings. This has led to an increase in such activities recently. China emphasized the importance of this issue and continues to communicate closely with Sri Lankan law enforcement, actively fostering cooperation to address online fraud. Thanks to joint efforts, Sri Lankan authorities arrested a number of Chinese nationals involved in fraud in 2024, who were later sent back to China in batches in 2025. "Relevant cooperation is being continuously advanced," the statement added. Reinforcing the long-standing relationship between the two nations, China expressed its willingness to further enhance collaboration with Sri Lanka, including improving joint investigations and coordination to tackle cross-border crimes like telecommunications and online fraud.
