Police highlight growing drug abuse among schoolchildren
Police are closely monitoring the rise of drug abuse among schoolchildren, according to Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler, the Police Media Spokesperson. In a media briefing on October 27, he highlighted that organized groups are selling drugs like “Mava” and babul disguised as popsicles, cotton candy, toffees, biscuits, and sweets near schools. He assured that strict actions are being taken against those involved in these illegal activities, with 11 suspects already arrested. ASP Wootler emphasized that drug-related crimes will face severe penalties, with no leniency. He pointed out that having more than five grams of cocaine, Crystal Methamphetamine (known as “Ice”), or heroin is a serious crime that can lead to the death penalty. The Police Media Spokesperson called on the public to stay alert and report any suspicious behavior in their communities, stressing that quick action is vital to protect loved ones from the increasing drug problem in Sri Lanka.
