114 shooting incidents with 60 fatalities reported in 2025
As the year 2025 comes to a close, police have reported two separate shooting incidents occurring in different areas of Sri Lanka within just eight hours. According to police data, there have been 114 shooting incidents across the country this year, leading to 60 fatalities and 57 injuries. Initial investigations by the police suggest that both of the recent shootings were executed by organized crime groups. One of the incidents took place around 10:30 p.m. last night in the Bodhiyawatte area of Kohuwala. The shooter, who arrived on a motorcycle, fired shots at a house and then fled. Fortunately, CCTV captured the suspect's image. A 16-year-old girl was injured in this incident and is currently in the hospital receiving care. Police confirmed that the shooter missed the intended target and accidentally hit the girl instead. Further inquiries have shown that a drug trafficker, who is currently in prison, lives close to the girl's home and is linked to the gang led by “Badowita Asanka.”
