Western province accounts for 42% of country s nominal GDP- CBSL

The Western province has maintained its position as the largest contributor to Sri Lanka's nominal GDP, making up 42.4 percent in 2024, as reported by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL). This significant contribution comes from robust activities in both the services and industrial sectors. Following the Western province, the North Western province contributed 11.5 percent, while the Central province accounted for 10.7 percent, ranking second and third in the economy for 2024, respectively, according to CBSL. Additionally, the contributions to nominal GDP from the Central, Eastern, North Western, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces have risen in 2024 compared to 2023. The North Western province was the top contributor to agriculture, representing 20.0 percent in 2024. The Central province contributed 13.9 percent, and the Southern province added 11.8 percent. In terms of industrial activities, the Western province was the leading contributor, making up 47.6 percent of the total industry value. The North Western province contributed 12.0 percent, and the Central province accounted for 9.6 percent, following closely. Moreover, the Western province also excelled in services activities, contributing 44.5 percent, with the Central province at 10.7 percent and the North Western province at 10.1 percent, according to the Central Bank.
