Over 30 major reservoirs continue to spill – Irrigation Dept.
More than 30 significant reservoirs are currently overflowing, according to the Irrigation Department. This morning (12), Eng. L. S. Sooriyabandara, who is the Director of Hydrology and Disaster Management, reported that several river basins received over 50 millimeters of rain in the last 24 hours. The upper areas of the Gin Ganga, Kalu Ganga, Kelani Ganga, and Yan Oya basins, along with parts of Batticaloa District, recorded nearly 50 mm of rainfall. As a result, water levels in some rivers have increased but remain below flood levels, Sooriyabandara explained. He also mentioned that about 34 major reservoirs are spilling water. To manage the situation, the spill gates of the Deduru Oya, Rajanganaya, Nachchaduwa, Yan Oya, Padaviya, Lunugamvehera, and Senanayake Samudraya reservoirs will be opened to lower water levels.
