Police have launched an investigation into an incident at the Mount Lavinia Magistrate’s Court premises in which a lawyer was allegedly assaulted by a police officer. Police said that the incident took place on October 10, when a dispute arose as a lawyer attempted to move his vehicle out of the court premises. Following a complaint, the police officer involved was arrested by the Mount Lavinia Police and produced before the court, which ordered him remanded until October 13, 2025. The Mount Lavinia Police Headquarters has also initiated a separate probe into allegations that another senior lawyer, who accompanied the assaulted lawyer, verbally threatened and used criminal force against the police officer during the altercation. Police said that video footage of the incident, recorded on a CD, has been obtained as case material and submitted for further investigation. Statements from several witnesses present at the scene have been recorded, while further inquiries are being conducted under the supervision of the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in charge of the Mount Lavinia Division.
