The Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of the Central Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB), Chandana Kodituwakku, announced that Sri Lanka will introduce a new law aimed at organized criminals within the next two weeks. He shared this information during the Ada Derana ‘Big Focus’ program, where he discussed efforts to combat drug trafficking and organized crime. DIG Kodituwakku explained that the new law will allow police to take organized criminals, who have already been convicted and are serving time, back into custody for additional investigations. He mentioned, “Right now, these people are held under the Prevention of Terrorism Act. However, we will have a very strict law focused on organized crime within two weeks.” He pointed out that they have identified well-known criminals who, despite being convicted, continue their illegal activities. The new law will give authorities the ability to move these individuals from prison to police custody for investigations into ongoing crimes, making it impossible for them to operate while incarcerated. “Additionally, there are already laws in place to seize the assets of those living abroad, and we have confiscated billions in assets gained through illegal activities,” he noted.
