Suspect known as Walpola Lala nabbed with Ice and sharp weapons
A 38-year-old man named Sumithra Arachchige Lalantha Gunawardena, also called “Walpola Lala,” was arrested by the Mulleriyawa Police. He is linked to several housebreakings and illegal items. The police caught him at Walpola Junction during a special operation. At the time of his arrest, he was riding a motorcycle and had over 10 grams of “Ice” (crystal methamphetamine) with him, as well as a weighing scale. This raised suspicions and led to further questioning. During questioning, he admitted that the weighing scale was stolen from a shop in Malabe and was meant to be sold. According to an Ada Derana reporter, the police later searched his home and found many sharp weapons, like swords and machetes. They are now investigating if these weapons were used in any violent acts. The suspect also confessed to many thefts, including stealing gas cylinders and water pumps, which he sold to a person on Kumbura Road in Hinatiyana. The police have recovered these stolen items. Additionally, he admitted to taking iron goods from a hardware store on Avissawella Road and stealing Rs. 30,000 from a robbery on the Mulleriyawa–Avissawella Road. Initial investigations have connected him to at least six different crimes.
