UNP wants govt to seek assurances of no further US military actions near Sri Lankan waters
The United National Party (UNP) has raised concerns about the Sri Lankan government's lack of communication regarding the sinking of an Iranian ship by a U.S. submarine in the country's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ). In a statement, the party asked the government to clarify if it received any prior notice from the United States about this military action and whether it was in line with the Colombo Security Conclave. The UNP stated, “These actions have turned our EEZ into a warzone, which could harm our business interests. Shipping costs and insurance rates are likely to rise, affecting the country's economy and the cost of living.” Additionally, the party urged the government to obtain guarantees from the United States to prevent any future military actions near Sri Lankan waters. They also suggested that the government should talk to shipping companies and insurance providers about the possible economic effects.
