This comes after a photo of him leaving a police station appeared in newspapers globally. Mountbatten-Windsor was taken into custody on Thursday, which was also his 66th birthday. He is being investigated for misconduct in public office due to claims that he shared confidential government documents with Jeffrey Epstein, a financier with a controversial past, while serving as a trade envoy. After being held for over 10 hours, the former prince was released but remains under investigation. Although he has not been charged with any crime, a Reuters photo captured him looking distressed in the back of a Range Rover, with red eyes and a shocked expression. The image of the former naval officer, once favored by the late Queen Elizabeth, was featured on front pages of newspapers in Britain and beyond, with headlines like “Downfall.” Mountbatten-Windsor has consistently denied any involvement in wrongdoing related to Epstein, who was a convicted sex offender and died in 2019. He has expressed regret over their friendship. However, the release of numerous documents by the U.S. government revealed that he maintained ties with Epstein even after the financier's 2008 conviction for soliciting prostitution from a minor. The documents indicated that Mountbatten-Windsor had sent Epstein British government reports regarding investment opportunities in Afghanistan and evaluations of Vietnam, Singapore, and other locations during his time as the Special Representative for Trade and Investment.
