LNP - Ranil’s arrest – First of its kind in SL history

Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was arrested by the CID a short while ago, is the first former head of state to be arrested by law enforcement ever in Sri Lankan history. Wickremesinghe has been arrested over allegations of misusing state funds for a personal trip he undertook to London when he was the Executive President. The former President had received a telephone call from CID officials on Tuesday, and although he usually gives his own date to appear for investigations, he had informed his lawyers he would attend it this week itself. Wickremesinghe’s lawyers had then informed the CID he would appear on Friday. The former President’s lawyers had advised him to be prepared for an arrest.
