President Opens Sl Air Force Museum..

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday opened the Air Force museum depicting the 58 year old history of the Air Force.
The President also launched the museum website. Associated with him were Secretary to the President Lalith Weerathunga, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and Air Chief Marshal Roshan Gunatilleke.
Items depicting the evolution of the air industry since the first air plane by the Wright brothers together with the machines by the Air Force during its 58 years, is housed in the museum.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa announced yesterday that the salaries of the Security Forces personnel would be increased with immediate effect. The President made this announcement addressing war heroes who had engaged in the humanitarian operation in the Vanni to defeat terrorism at the 651 Brigade Headquarters in Mulankavil in the Kilinochchi district. While expressing his gratitude and tribute to the Security Forces, the President emphasized that they had fought to defend the nation during last three years with so much sacrifice but had never voiced concern regarding the salaries/perks they received.

Fonseka returns Sri Lanka and is driven away under tight security

COLOMBO Sri Lanka`s top military officer returned home Thursday after he was allowed to complete a US visit without being questioned over alleged war crimes against Tamil civilians.
General Sarath Fonseka arrived at Bandaranaike International Airport and was immediately driven away under tight security, an airport official said.
`He arrived this morning in a commercial flight and was escorted out of the airport by his security convoy,` an official said.

SYDNEY Australia called off an air and sea search for survivors on Wednesday after a boat carrying unidentified Sri Lankans sank in remote seas far off its northwest, killing 12.
Home Minister Brendan O`Connor said there was no hope of finding anyone else alive after the boat carrying 39 went down in stormy conditions overnight Sunday, sparking frantic rescue efforts by passing ships and Australian planes.

IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said his doors are open for the public to meet him on Fridays from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.
All Police personnel who have problems in the Department also could meet me on every second Mondays and last Mondays from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m, Balasuriya told a press briefing at the IGP s Chambers yesterday afternoon.
This is my first media briefing after assuming office, I will arrange a media meeting within two weeks to highlight about my future programs to maintain law and order in the country, the IGP said.

The Sri Lanka Navy had refuted Indian media reports, which quoted Indian fishermen as claiming that Chinese nationals were patrolling the seas along with the Sri Lankan Navy.
Navy Spokesperson Commander D.K.P Dassanayake, speaking to Daily Mirror, stressed that there were no Chinese nationals aboard Sri Lankan Navy ships and insisted that there was no need for any Chinese to be among the Sri Lankan Navy either.

Speaking to the Daily News yesterday afternoon the new IGP Mahinda Balasuriya said that his theme will be for a People friendly, professional and prestigious Police Service .
Senior DIG Mahinda Balasuriya is among the ten Senior DIGs in the Police Department.
Born on June 18, 1953, he is an old boy of Ananda College, Colombo enlisted with the Police Force on March 1, 1978 as a Probationary ASP.

Controversy surrounds Australia s decision to keep Sri Lanka out of negotiations over Sri Lankan Tamils now held in Indonesia and Australia.
Australia recently reached a bilateral agreement with Indonesia to confine the Sri Lankans in Indonesia at Australia s expense. Well informed sources told The Island that Australia had so far not sought Sri Lanka s advice in that regard, though a section of the Australian Opposition had taken a different position.

Loans for house construction to be prioritised:
The Army is to re-introduce its free transport facilities to soldiers as earlier, since LTTE terrorism has now been defeated and its threat diminished, said Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya yesterday morning.
He was addressing a cross-section of other ranks serving the Colombo Army Headquarters for the first time after he took over as the Commander.

In an operation similar to the one conducted in the East with the support of breakaway LTTE cadres headed by Karuna, the government is now using Vanni Tiger cadres to quell a fresh attempt to revive the LTTE.
Although the circumstances under which the Vanni cadres are deployed are very much different from the eastern operation, the on-going police work has produced positive results.
A small group of ex-LTTE cadres, including battle hardened ones are now working with the Northern Range Police to apprehend hard core LTTE cadres taking refuge among civilians accommodated at welfare centres and ascertain exact involvement of those who had already acknowledged their role in the organisation as well as sleeping cadres.

The European Union (EU) has continued to put pressure on the Sri Lankan government to address several concerns being raised over alleged human rights allegations including media suppression and has insisted that Sri Lanka must respond through actions and not words.
In an email to Daily Mirror online, Mrs Jean Lambert, Chair of the European Parliament (EP) Delegation for Relations with South Asia said that a European Parliament Resolution adopted last week shows beyond any doubt that the apprehensions of the European Parliament on Sri Lanka is widely shared.

India s top intelligence wing has acquired some key information about a dangerous alliance between the Maoists and the LTTE. Indian Central Intelligence Agencies have found fresh evidence of joint training camps and meetings conducted by the Red guerrillas with the LTTE in the forests of south and central India.
Indian Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram earlier asserted that Naxalites are acquiring arms from abroad. According to sources, a well-trained 12-member group of LTTE cadres recently sneaked into India to join hands with the Maoists.

Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Maheepala Herath yesterday (26) assured an impartial investigation after a UNP councillor brought to his notice several cases of sexual harassment by a principal of a government school in the Kolonna Educational Division.
Herath said that allegations would be investigated and if the principal was found guilty, he would be dealt with appropriately.
A spokesperson for Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council told The Island that Councillor Jagath Palliyaguru had raised the issue at yesterday s second reading of the provincial budget.

Indian link in LTTE refugee ship exposed

Investigations into the seizure of Ocean Lady , carrying 76 Sri Lankan Tamils have taken an unexpected turn with indications of a possible Indian link. According to reports, the vessel had left India early September before being intercepted off the west coast by the Canadians.
Quoting international shipping records, the National Post (of Canada) writer Stewart Bell has said that the ship, sailing under the false name of Ocean Lady , had left an India port early last month.
