The government has decided that news websites to be registered with the Media Ministry must pay a registration fee and an annual fee.
Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella told the weekly cabinet press briefing today that accordingly news websites must pay Rs. 100,000 (US$ 1000) to register and also Rs. 50,000 (US$ 500) annually.
He said that the payments will be made mandatory under the amended Press Council Act which will regulate websites apart from newspapers.
The move is likely to see several non-profit news websites operated by individuals being forced to shut down.
The move follows the controversy over the Sri Lanka Mirror and Sri Lanka X News websites which were raided by the CID recently over allegations of publishing false news.

| If the govt thinks people get swayed by the news web sites that publish point of view opposite to its point of view, it in itself is an admission that the govt media machine cannot take across the govt view point in a level acceptable to the public, ie. people think what govt publishes are lies. dont know who is advising things like this to the govt. instead of promoting web participation in SL it is discouraging it by things like this. |

Mr.B
This fee is nothing compared to your ad revenue. Pay it and be a proud 'Deshapremiya'.
However, now you have a big job to do. Make sure no one posts/writes here criticizing RAJA or his family members or cronies.
Messages posted at this site are the sole opinion and responsibility of the poster.
You can't getaway with this rule. They don't work with GOSL.
Good luck !
