Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority has banned the transportation of foreign tourists by three wheeler taxis that are not licensed for the purpose.

The Authority has given training to the three wheeler drivers in serving the tourists. The drivers who successfully completed the four-day training have been given a certificate and the necessary permission to transport tourists.

According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority, only the three wheelers who have been certified can now transport tourists.

The three wheelers that have permission to transport tourists will display the permit so that the tourists can easily identify those three wheelers.

The three wheelers, called as tuk-tuk by the foreigners, are a very low cost taxi service with minimum facilities, mostly used by locals. The tourists have lodged complaints over their service.

The government has focused on regulating around half a million three wheeler taxis that operate country wide and a regulation bureau is to be formed for this purpose.
