United National Party (UNP) Jaffna district parliamentarian Ms. Vijyakala Maheswaran Monday requested Sri Lanka government to launch an inquiry into the attack on Tamil prisoners in Colombo remand prison on Saturday. The Tamil prisoners were attacked when they complained to the prison authorities that they were being detained in overcrowded cells in the prison, sources in Colombo said.

She appealed to Sri Lanka government to take immediate measures to ensure the safety of Tamil prisoners now being detained in Colombo prisons.

Ms. Vijyakala Maheswaran is the wife of the slain UNP Jaffna district parliamentarian T. Maheswaran.

She successfully contested Jaffna district as a UNP candidate in the last general election.

It is the duty of the prison officials to protect the prisoners.

This has been blacked out by most of the Colombo media like other criminal incidents in Jaffna carried out by paramilitary EPDP and military army with the approval of the police who do not speak the language of the locals.

Mrs Maheswaran, you must know the president will do anything to protect the attackers.

Yes, Sri Lankan Gov should find away to transfer all these prisoners to a TN prison where they will be well treated until the court case come to an end. Viko and the gang can visit them and make sure they are treated properly...

Purpose of detaining Tamil prisoners in the South is obvious from the past experiences. In Welika and Bindunuweewa they were massacred and the Sinhala police and judges are complicit in setting the offenders free without any retrial or investigation.
The incident occurred in two different series of actions: the first on 25 July 1983 when 35 Tamil prisoners were attacked and killed by Sinhalese inmates. The second massacre was two days later when Sinhalese inmates killed another 18 Tamil detainees and 3 prison deputies.

The prison guards supplied weapons ...
In Bindunuweewa massacre 28 Tamil suspects were slaughtered in the presence of the police and the judges set all of the accused free
