We give below excerpts of a speech made by the present opposition leader , Ranil Wickremesinghe in 1992 as reported in the Hansard (1045/1046) when UNP was in power and what he told the Opposition:

I will tell you that at the next Elections you will lose, the elections after that you will lose and the election after that . He continued, You all cannot win. You want people from other parties ..

More excerpts of what he said are appended at the end of this article.

It is an irony of ironies that this present Opposition leader who made such a vociferous speech against a leader who loses elections deems it fit now to continue adamantly and shamelessly as the leader of the opposition and the UNP, after losing elections after elections after elections after .plunging the party into utter chaos and crises .What is more ? he is trying to outmaneuver by foul means every move brought to replace him by fair means by the entire UNP hierarchy and the membership.

We reproduce below excerpts of the speech Ranil Wickremesinghe made in 1992, (quoted from Hansard 1045/1046)

The Government has not run away. We have said here is the forum, go to the forum and prove the case. The opportunity is available .. But you are sorry because what you all (sic) what is some mud to throw because you cannot win the election. How can you win the election? You are talking of the Westminster system. The first thing is that when a leader loses the election, that leader should step down and a new leader should take over. Without doing that do not go and blame this on black cats, white cats and other cats, tigers and the JVP. Firstly your leader has not resigned. In this period look at the (British) Labour Party. Mr Callaghan resigned. Mr Michael Foot resigned Mr Neil Kinnock resigned. What has happened to the SLFP? That is the First, you must face the situation. Have a new leadership. Have a new set of policies. Then if you are beaten you can go into the matter. Hon Deputy Speaker, we cannot wish for a better Opposition than the Opposition there is now. This is the Best Opposition we can have. We like you, we want you to stay in this place. You cannot face up to the fact that the people do not want you and that you have been thrown into the dustbin.

Callaghan, Foot and Kinnock had principles. Blair spoiled the picture, unfortunately, but even he ultimately had to resign (reluctantly) for the good of the party and country. Brown was a decent man but a hopeless leader.

The question is, who is to replace Ranil? The chasing pack all seem like dodgy geezers to me, whose only interest is their own comforts. This is why even UNP party representatives are said to have voted for Mahinda.

I would change Ranil's speech like this:
When an 'HONEST' leader loses elections......
When a leader who wants to 'WORK FOR THE COUNTRY' loses elections...
Ranil W is not in either group.
Present 'leaders' of the UNP are not bent on working for the country, but to work for themselves...
That is why RW is still the cardboard leader of the UNP.
Is there a 'replacement', in the UNP for Ranil?
