Rehabilitation and Prisons Reforms Minister Dew Gunasekera says an urgent programme is needed to provide relief to war widows, including wives of the LTTE cadres killed during the war.

Speaking to The Island after meeting groups of war widows in Vavuniya, Jaffna and Kilinochchi over a week ago, Minister Gunasekera emphasized the importance of meaningful measures to alleviate their suffering.

General Secretary of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka, Gunasekera said that among the women whom he had met in Jaffna were the wives of K.V. Balakumaran and Yogiratnam Yogi, a member of the LTTE negotiating team for talks with the then President Ranasinghe Premadasa s government. The Army killed Balakumaran on the Vanni east front early last year.

Balakumaran was formerly the leader of the Eelam Revolutionary Organisation of Students (EROS) and joined the LTTE in the early 1990s.

Minister Gunasekera acknowledged that there had not been a detailed study on LTTE widows, though various NGOs and government officials from time to time had given different figures since the conclusion of the war in May last year.

He said that his ministry had called for applications from people of the Northern Province before meeting them in three separate groups in Jaffna (July 10), Kilinochchi (11) and Vavuniya (12). Responding to our query, he said that of the 8,000 who had responded to his ministry s call, about 98 per cent were young women.

Minister Gunasekera said that a considerable number of men and women, too, were held by the military since the conclusion of the war. As they had been members of the LTTE at the time of its collapse on the Vanni front, it would be natural for security forces to investigate their role and also rehabilitate them before their release, Minister Gunasekera said.

He said that he had had an opportunity to discuss the issue of war widows with UN Resident Representative in Colombo Neil Bhune before National Freedom Front (NFF) leader Minister Wimal Weerawansa launched a fast unto death outside the UN compound in Colombo. Minister Gunasekera regretted that their efforts to obtain UN assistance to help war widows could be delayed due to the on-going dispute between Sri Lanka and the UN.

How did Balakumaran and Yogi die? Were they executed? Or, killed in fog of war? Which one of them was an opportunist? Which one of them had any moral qualms of staying with the National Leader who dug the graves for our people? One of them had a son or a daughter sent abroad to study. Was it Balakumaran?

Ah..........so many damn questions. Will Rudra and PooPillai step forward and provide help to the war widows of the fighters who died for their cause? Nay........what kind of of stupid question is that? Or, would Thivya come forward with even moronic treatise on Tamil that, Tamil this, Singalam did that, Injans did this, blah.....blah.........while our some of erstwhile brothers and sisters are busy with insurance fraud and credit card fraud in Canada and elsewhere. How could PooPillai miss that stench?

Why should GOSL spend a dime? It is the moral responsibility of EVERY Tamil who gave money to the LTTE's war machine to do what is RIGHT. They should help the war widows, help the former fighters (and GOSL) in re-integrating them into the civil society and help in re-building the North & East. If they can't do that, and still think wasting their time & money behind the likes of Rudra, PooPillai, Nediyavan, or other do-gooders in UK, then they have NO right to ask anyone else to help.

Someone last week thought MR said the following. I wrote the comments in reference to MR's speech in Kilinochi.

An excellent speech by the President. Right place. Right time.

My comments:

Everyone in Sri Lanka should shed their ethnnicity-based differences created by the British-educated politicians and come together to build a prosperous country for the future.

Tamils living outside of Sri Lankan should help Sri Lanka become unified and not take part in any activities that would undermine the country's future.

So the so called Diaspora have to take care of them,.. their husbands died in the war front, not because they wanted to do so, but to satisfy Diaspora's pipe dream....
So, Thivya, Kural, Nale, Robbing, Gaja, and all others who jump up and down here,... there is an excellent chance to show your affection to the Peelam... and you can resurrect another Prabhakaran among their kids,....

But, I know you will not do that, because, you all need to live abroad in luxury with the 'homeland Dream' in your heads,... Let the innocent people and Sri Lankan Tamils die for your dream.. We wouldn't or even our kids,...
They have to learn for their future,.. only poor kids in SL should die,....

Nale Paithiyam,

Looks like a British a55 licker has been rubbed the wrong way. You should read what I wrote about the 'role' played by the 'Ceylon Tamils' in the Colonial times and later, how they ended up helping India to destroy Sri Lanka's future. For your information, neither myself nor my family would have left Sri Lanka if not for what Prabhakaran started with help from RAW and many 'Ceylon Tamils' who fell down from Queen's Grace after Independence. I am not one of those 'boat jumpers' you are so damn familiar with in EU, Canada and Australia.

BTW, can your TAMIL DAUGHTER speak in TAMIL? Does she know anything 'Tamilish' other than shopping in Chennai with your British Pounds? LOL.... Or, wait. I've got something better for you. How would you like to take a trip to Sri Lanka and come face to face with the former fighters of the LTTE? I mean. Don't you want to know how grateful they feel for your kind and generous support for their sacrifices? Take your English speaking daughter with you ............

The mother of Sravanai Tharsika, the family consultant nurse allegedly killed by a Sinhala doctor in the islets of Jaffna, complained in Oorkaavattu rai magistrate court Monday that unidentified persons on motor cycles had come to her house several times and threatened her and her family with death if they pursue in any way with the case of Tharsika s killing, sources in Oorkaavattu rai said.

Doctor or sinhala thug?
