Child Protection Authority states the tendency to hand over children by parents to probationary authorities has increased and reveals that there are 18,000 children under its protection.
The Statistical officer of the Authority Ms. Malkanthi Tillekeratne says parents hand over their children to the authority as they are unable to look after them due to extreme poverty. Probation Officer Ms. Nimali Perera agreed and said most of the children who have been handed over to probation officers were not orphans.
The most pathetic factor here is certain parents murder their children due to poverty. There were several such incidents reported in the media in the recent past.
The number of children handed over to probationary officers in 2007 was 1194.
