Oxford fiasco: Who misled the Sri Lankan President?

Last Monday evening, London`s Met Office issued severe weather warnings. Mostly cloudy, temperatures had hit near zero. Many couldn`t go to work some were trapped in trains for hours because the tracks were covered with snow and ice. The city`s Mayor Boris Johnson was in Zurich trying to win the FIFA World Cup football bid assuring Londoners there was enough salt to clear the mush-like slippery streets.
That night, a delayed SriLankan Airlines flight UL 509 from Colombo had just touched down at the Heathrow Airport. Air Traffic Controllers cleared Captain Prasanna Karunatilleke, who was in command, to taxi to Terminal 4, which deals with long haul flights for airlines like SriLankan. As the Airbus A-340 rolled, with a VVIP entourage on board, none was aware that a chilly reception awaited them in more ways than one.

The reason -- a few hundred pro-Eelam supporters of the now defeated Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) had crowded the arrival lounge at Terminal 4. Others had braved freezing temperatures to remain outside waving placards and shouting slogans. Many of them carried the red and gold LTTE flag with its emblem.

The placards accused President Mahinda Rajapaksa of being a `war criminal`. Some called for his arrest. They shouted highly inflammatory slogans. The Sri Lankan government lost no time in charging that the organisers were `the rump of the LTTE still functioning in the United Kingdom and claiming to be a Tamil Diaspora.`

The official government website news.lk declared later, `The inability to take necessary action against the highly bloated threats from such groups is not what is expected from a country where modern policing began with Sir Robert Peel and his Bobbies, is the home of Scotland Yard, and boasts of a special Anti-Terrorism Laws and institutions.`

As the seconds passed by on Monday night, the demonstrators were becoming a knotty issue. Sri Lanka`s High Commissioner Nihal Jayasinghe, his senior officials and the Police were worried how they would ensure the safe exit of President Rajapaksa to his hotel, the five-star Dorchester located in the heart of London`s Mayfair on Park Lane. Some of those in the entourage were booked at the four-star Lancaster Hotel at Hyde Park.

President Rajapaksa and an entourage of more than 40 were arriving in London for a much-publicised and talked of event -- an address to the Oxford Union on Thursday, December 2. The entourage included Army and Presidential Security Division personnel for security. Originally arranged for a date in early November this year, the address was re-scheduled for December 3 as the President was too busy. External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris and Higher Education Minister S.B. Dissanayake were among those who accompanied him. A third minister, Douglas Devananda, could not join because the British High Commission in Colombo had refused him a visa. He is on their blacklist. Most others received their British entry permit (visa) as much as three hours late forcing a delayed departure of UL 509. This was an early indicator of what was in store. It was then a case of rushing from the High Commission to the Bandaranaike International Airport for the flight.

`President Rajapaksa was the first Head of State of Sri Lanka and the first Sri Lankan statesman who was not previously a member (sic) or held office in the Oxford Union to address it as a guest speaker,` said a background note from the Policy Research and Information Unit (PRIU) of the Presidential Secretariat. The material was part of a pre-event campaign. It said he is also the only Sri Lankan invited to address for the second time. If official reports termed this a `rare honour,` senior Sri Lankan diplomats differed.

They said no heads of state in the past heeded requests for an appearance a second time. The PRIU background note said, `Sri Lanka`s renowned politicians and statesmen such as former Prime Minister S.W.R.D. Bandaranaike, former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, former Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, late Minister Lalith Athulathmudali and President Mahinda Rajapaksa, have previously addressed the Oxford Union. Late Minister Lalith Athulathmudali was the first Sri Lankan to be elected as the President of the Oxford Union in 1958.

One thing is needed to be said straightly.

Mahinda Sir was not smart enough to handle the Oxon Invitation.

The Bureacrats, who are around MR are not matured enough to tackle a simple situation, where we could avoid all embarassments.

1. Did he consult Gota Sir and Sri Lankan Defence Lawyers on this invitation ?

2. Why SL Ambassador in UK act so poorly ? Was there any hidden intentions behind ? Why the Embassy could not produce JJ and Wbahu Speeches ?

3. Why MR wanted to go to UK, around the 27th of November, where all Terrorists get excited ?

4. Why MR neglect possibilities of the UK Judiciary System and it's capabilities ? MR and GL both hav Law backgrounds.
Why SLFP UK Organizer could not foresee this outcome, which me and MoneyTalks discussed while having a Local Arrack at a Moratuwa Bar ?

5. Why SL Embassy could not request MR's Security before his landing in UK ?

6. Why SL Government did not hire UK Lawyers before MR left to UK ?

7. Why Dinesh hit Dr. Jayalath, when his Brother in Law (Bahu) was more critical to MR and SL ? Will he hit Bahu, after he returned back to SL ?

8. Though Chamal Sir acted properly in the situation, where JJ was criticised as a Traitor, why Chamal Sir is very bias to UNP Members ? Is he against UPFA and Is he trying to laugh on the Government MPs who supported MR ?

9. I am suggesting to handle Chamal Sir carefully, as it looks like he is pulling the UPFA Legs and by doing that MR's Legs as well.

HANDLE WITH CARE....THAT IS ALL I CAN SAY ABOUT CHAMAL SIR---

Why he cannot see anything wrong with Opposition Members, and why he is asking ONLY the Government Members to go out ?

10. Who were the Members of the Committee, which evaluated the President's London Trip ?
Why they could not forsee things, which any other ordinary Lanka could see ? Why they did not calculate the possibility of Channel 4 Release ?

11. Why SL Government does not investigate the Cellular Companies (specially the Networks providers for the troubled area in 2009 at the peak) for possible mishandling (copying) of the transmitted data ?

12. Finally, why they take JJ as a Traitor, when Dinesh's Classmate Ponil was the Person who signed the CFA ?

From my point of view, JJ was correct, and he acted in a very straight forward way, and he represented what he believed. He is correct.

My Questions to Dinesh and other Dumb Dumbs are :
1. Will you hit your Brother in Law, when he return back from UK ?
2. Why onl Dr. JJ ? Then why not Ponil and Your Brother in Law.??
3. Since Dr. JJ is a lonely man, do you think that him as an easy prey ? If you can show us your impartiality by hitting Ponil and Brother in Law as well....

To normalize relations with West, Tamil Diaspora
Sri Lanka should probe war crimes allegations: Karu
December 4, 2010, 7:26 pm

UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya yesterday urged President Mahinda Rajapaksa to investigate human rights allegations leveled against the country during Eelam War IV. He said last week s protests directed at President Rajapaksa during his visit to London underscored the need to investigate war crimes allegations as part of Sri Lanka s approach to normalize its relations with the West and Tamil Diaspora.

'The events that transpired during President Mahinda Rajapaksa s visit to Britain have filled the people of this country with dismay and caused significant embarrassment to the Sri Lankan state and its citizenry. The President was beleaguered from the moment of his arrival in Britain, with protesters flocking to the airport and causing disruptions to every aspect of his programme, culminating in the unilateral cancellation of his scheduled speech to the prestigious Oxford Union, which was the primary purpose of his visit', the MP said in a statement.

The treatment of the Sri Lankan President deeply wounds the psyche and the morale of the people of this country, who are struggling still to break out of economic shackles, despite the conclusion of the war and the tremendous economic saving the conflict s end has created for the country. A slight to the Head of State of this country is a slight to the Sri Lankan state and it is disgraceful that it is the cavalier conduct of this regime has led to this tragic and humiliating state of affairs during the President s visit overseas, Jayasuriya noted.

Since the conclusion of the war against the LTTE, Sri Lanka has been dogged by allegations of massive civilian casualties, and the blatant disregard of human rights which has led to the muzzling of the free press, abduction and assassination of journalists and the stifling of political dissent. The government,

playing constantly to the sensibilities of its hawkish support base has consistently denied the allegations, refused to investigate even the more serious incidents of violence and extra-judicial killings and adopted an obtuse approach to global criticism by constantly making wild claims about international conspiracies. The events in Britain this week is merely a case of this regime s immature and delusional approach to foreign policy coming to a head, he said.

Jayasuriya s statement further noted: This regime has continuously claimed that it 'looks East' as a keystone of its foreign policy and many of its vociferous proponents have continuously lambasted Western nations and the UN. While there is nothing wrong with strengthening our ties with Asian nations, the reasons for the government to do are troubling. It is somewhat correctly assumed that Asian nations vying for influence in Sri Lanka do not care about the current regime s appalling human rights record or the trampling of freedoms while the West expects a higher standard of governance.

While some may argue that there is a Western conspiracy to tarnish the image of Sri Lanka it would better serve us to realize that the image is but a reflection of reality. If the Sri Lankan government has intentionally targeted our own fellow civilians during the later part of the conflict, if its agents have killed and hounded journalists, stifled free speech and made a mockery of this country s proud democratic traditions paving the way for a dynastic autocracy then we, more than any other should be concerned regarding our plight. It will serve us well to introspectively reflect on what our own government has done or in many cases not done to attract such sanctions in the international arena.

Rightly or wrongly the world expects nations and their governments to conduct themselves according to certain universal standards. Democracy, freedom of expression and adherence to fundamental human rights of citizens, whether they are eastern or western concepts are principles that will better serve a nation. It is important that the Sri Lankan people realize that autocratic politicians from countries such as Myanmar and Zimbabwe have consistently sought to label these values as Western interventions to deny their people these basic rights.

It is indeed unfortunate that the Oxford Union did not allow the president of Sri Lanka his right to free speech. In fact his Secretary, Lalith Weeratunge had called the Oxford Union as an institution with a rich history of upholding freedom of expression. It is however ironic that this is the very freedom that has been mostly affected by the present regime back home in Sri Lanka. It might be a point to ponder for the President whether he and his administration has held the right to free expression in the same esteem that he expects the Oxford Union to. Killings, abductions and assaults of journalists have gone unabated in Sri Lanka under Presidents present administration. Media institutions have been bombed, intimidated and bought into submission. The voice of dissent has been silenced and democratic space has been shrunk to near non existence. While the president had all the right to be heard it is only hoped that he allows every other voice that his regime has silenced be given this basic right.

There is no way the president is going to investigate. Soldiers pulled the trigger slaughtering women and children but the orders came from top Civilian and Military personal. US cables were more or less on the money.

As long as the government maintains that its record in warfare has been spotless and pure, flatly dismisses serious allegations without credible investigation and opts to denigrate and insult our fellow members in the global community every time they expect us to hold ourselves to a higher standard of civility and conduct, Sri Lankans will be seen world over as barbaric killers and heinous liars. This negativity towards Sri Lanka will have devastating consequences for trade, tourism and foreign investments, creating further economic burdens for the people of this country.

I appeal to the government to stop treating governance as a joke and something so trivial as to conduct government business in a way that only appeals to the local electorate. Governance cannot only be about winning elections. In these last two years, Sri Lanka s standing in the modern world has been eroded in an unprecedented way and the government has no one but itself to blame. While it is all very well to harp on Sri Lanka s rights in the world, it would do this regime well to contemplate also upon its obligations, both to its citizens and as a responsible member of the world community.

Instead this regime has chosen once more to lay blame on the opposition, manhandle opposition members of parliament and generally pass the buck for all the winds that are blowing against Sri Lanka in the world. Once more it has chosen to play to local sensibilities, reinforcing the notion that all the business of this government is one big sell, to ensure votes at the next election. Where it could have sought the support of the opposition to help our country to face these international allegations, the regime has chosen to divide and fracture us, throw the man responsible for the military victory against the LTTE behind bars and accuse opposition members of treason.

The time has come for introspection. It is clear that the world is growing impatient with Sri Lanka s attitude. If nothing else the President s visit to Britain should be an eye opener for this regime that the only way to restore Sri Lanka s good name in the world is to investigate these many allegations against us and take genuine steps to address the just claims of the Minority. This is the only way to diminish the credibility of these protesting groups and the only way to counter worldwide sympathy with their cause. Let us put our house in order before the impunity and hubris of today becomes our collective tragedy and shame tomorrow.'

If he accepts the truth there will be pressure to bring these war criminals to justice. Everyone have a general idea where the orders came and who these personnel are, so is not or cant do it.
I think SL is better off even if these waar criminals are charged. There is a 50/50 chance the charges wont stick and SL will not be held hostage on this issue.

Exactly, they should have had a plan B if they were to face protests from Tigers and SF supporters. They should have consulted the UK authorities whether they would provide security in the event of protests, but one thing is clear UK tax payers are not prepared foot the bill for a private thamasa.

Who misled the Sri Lankan President?

Apparently, the embassy warned MR & company but it was Vaas who made the calls. So you cannot blame the embassy

Regardless, it was the weak UK government and the Oxford union who should be blamed.

How could they not provide security for a head of state from a mere 5000 or LTTE sympathizers? Is that what this mighty country can do.

How come they did not warn him in advance?

They really humiliated whole of SL.

Now do not let any of this scum back into SL for any reason
