Now the tourists are not coming the Sinhala Sex Industry is going looking for customers wherever they are ?

Wednesday, 27 February 2008 - 2:30 AM SL Time

A prostitution ring operated by Sri Lankan pimps in a noted `red light` area in Singapore and involving scores of Sri Lankan women has been exposed in a video aired by the Singapore Home Ministry and the anti vice squad of that country.

The secretly shot video shows a group of Sri Lankan women seeking `customers` at Lorang 15 in the Geylang district under the watchful eyes of Sri Lankan pimps, most of whom are said to be well known in the area and operating there for well over a year. One Sri Lankan sex worker is shown getting into an argument in Sinhala with another woman over clients and rates, before a pimp had to intervene resulting in one of them breaking down in tears before composing herself to get on with her chosen profession.

According to the video narrator, quarrels and fights among Sri Lankan sex workers over customers are now becoming a common occurrence with the women reportedly having no choice but to seek clients regardless of race or religion.

While some women are keen to return home, the narrator says they are however not keen to reveal the identity of the pimps out of fear. However the secretly shot video gives a close-up view of the pimps while CCTV images also reveal their identity.

The Daily Mirror has meanwhile learnt that among the women are some who went to Singapore after being duped with prospects of better employment but have ended up being forced into prostitution as a means of survival without a means of returning home.

A well informed source in Singapore said most of the women were stranded in Singapore and were scared or ill informed on how to seek assistance from the Sri Lankan mission in the country. The Sri Lankan embassy in Singapore could not be reached for a comment as the high commissioner was at a meeting

Prostitution is legal in Singapore and Geylang is known as the red light town of the country where local and foreign women offer cheap sex leading to an increase in crime and violence in the area forcing the Geylang police to crackdown on some of these activities.

The Singapore Home Affairs Ministry has last year some 5,400 foreign prostitutes were arrested, a 25% increase compared to 2006. Besides enforcement, police have also initiated several vice-control measures. For example, last year they began placing CCTVs along selected Geylang streets to prevent crime and this has deterring effect in soliciting by sex workers. The police also impose stringent licensing conditions for entertainment outlets and massage parlours in the area.

Robins :

i saw many videos in YouTube, very disturbing to see how these girls brought to Singapore by thugs/pimps and put them on the street . i feel sad for all these poor girls. Sinhala people collectively put an end to these sex trade inside SL or on a foreign land by educating these poor girls. Very disturbing trend.
Otherwise SL will be a Thailand.

If ODEL can go abroad why cant the sex Industry?

Sri Lankan department store ODEL hopes to expand in Asia

Nov 21, 2006 (LBO) Sri Lanka s top department store ODEL hopes to expand into Asia, as war fears in Sri Lanka scare away tourists that used to flock to the store in better times.

We plan to go overseas (in Asia). We are looking at a couple of options. We are already in discussion with people overseas and with certain groups of companies overseas Otara Gunawardena Chief Executive Officer ODEL told LBO Tuesday.

The company is also hopeful that it can push its ODEL range of products overseas, Gunawardena said.

Expansion of the local ODEL store is also on the cards About 2,000 people shop at ODEL each day, with the numbers as high as 4,000 a day in the festive season.

Foreign clientele make up about 40 percent of total customers, with the recent drop in tourism having a slight effect on sales.

We have finalized all plans for expansion next year that will give us about 100,000 square feet in total. We hope to finish in two years.

Recent import taxes have also affected the store s pricing on some goods, especially items such as chocolates, Gunawardena says.

Meanwhile, ODEL has already lit up for the Christmas season, rolling out its Red theme to flag off festivities

This is the oldest profession and it is going to be there whether people like it or not. Governments and other agencies should do a better job monitoring and controlling this. I saw a CBC documentary on Thailand and that was bad as a lot of children are abused, there was another documentary on India where a group is trying to rescue children abused for sex within the country.

It's nice to know your genuine concern about these women, i wonder what choices they have, would they rather be subject to Kfir Bombs or suicide bombs.

You cannot military resolve this conflict, the road to peace can only be achieve through negotiated settlement. For the last 30 years no party wanted to compromise to find a solution and all pushed for war for their selfish greedy ambitions. One day they might catch VP and declare war has won, and someone else will emerge, the mistrust, hatred and pain will carry on forever. I truly don't see the objective of the blood bath other than for short term goals.

People are in poverty, many thousands living in refugee camps and in danger of getting killed, not safe to travel in bus or train. These poor men and women are as not luck as we are, they'll have to find jobs else where to feed their families. You have women like ODEL who has created many jobs for men and women with out expecting free hand outs from politicians. SHe started from scratch. and there are many more like her will emerge all over the country if given chance.

It makes me want to throw up for all the crocodile tears by people from both sides who instigate for war while living in cushy life in the west. What a hypocrisy.
