Rajitha hails President`s comments to Indian TV as `historic`

The UNP in Parliament yesterday said they would support President Mahinda Rajapaksa if he maintained the stance outlined by him in an interview with Indian TV to seek a negotiated solution to the ethnic conflict.
UNP MP Dr. Rajitha Senaratne hailed as `historic`, the President`s comments made to Indian Television channel NDTV, where he said that the government would not present a set of `take it or leave it` proposals that would push the LTTE to the wall, but rather present proposals the LTTE could respond to.
'This is the best statement made by the President so far on finding a negotiated solution with the LTTE. In fact, it is a historic statement. We fully endorse this stance and are willing to support it, if the President stick to this approach,' he said speaking during the Emergency debate in Parliament.
Quoting an English Daily, Dr. Senaratne said the President had expressed belief that he and Prabhakaran could sit down and discuss a solution, because both are `Sri Lankans`.
'This was the same stance held by Vijeya Kumaratunga. It is what leaders like Gamini Dissanayake, Lalith Athulathmudali and Premadasa died for. If all of us adopt this mentality then we won`t be fighting in Parliament. We are all responsible for the killings that take place in the name of dirty politics', he said.
However Dr. Senaratne cautioned that he hoped President Rajapakse would not get into the habit of saying one thing to the foreign media and another to the local media. (GdeC&KB)

Dina,
I do not agree with the way Ranil has handled the party as well but to be fair to the man, he did not try to sabotage the Government by organising strikes, protests etc.
With the Government in crisis, he could have made the situation worse. Yes, anyone yearns for power not just Ranil. Remember what Rajapakse promised (remember them one by one from peace process to cost of living) in the elections? He has done the opposite, the pseudo-patriots hide their heads in shame!
If JVP was in the Opposition, they would have gone to town by now with the utter failure of the Government to maintain law and order and cost of living. Comapre that with Ranil's laid back attitude. I blame him for a different reason ... for not taking the Government head on and allowing them to do as they wish.
By the way, I wonder what portfolio Rajitha is going to get from Mahinda in the near future. |
