Zero tolerance for child sex tourism in Sri Lanka
Tuesday, 20 June 2006 - 2:45 PM SL Time

A two year action plan to stop the commercial exploitation of Sri Lanka children has been launched today. While the exact numbers are unknown, it has been estimated that thousands of Sri Lankan children are drawn into prostitution every year with the majority of them being boys. These children are exploited by foreign tourists, as well as by local people.

The campaign will target tourists, children and adolescents, hoteliers, journalists, families and community leaders, with the message that there is 'zero tolerance' for child sex tourism.

As well as mass media campaigns on television, radio and in newspapers, messages will be relayed to tourists through a range of devices: in-flight magazines and videos, billboards, posters, car-stickers and flyers. Legal penalties for the sexual exploitation of children range from 5 to 20 years imprisonment.

'Sexual exploitation in tourism has become a totally unacceptable phenomenon worldwide and is reaching an alarming level,' Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) Chairman Udaya Nanayakkara said.

He was speaking at the launch of the nationwide Action Plan and Media Campaign to Combat Child Sex Tourism. This action plan is carried out by the SLTB with financial assistance and technical support from UNICEF.

'Quite often child sex tourism is ignored and denied by many actors in the tourism industry. I am confident that we will be able to put a stop to the abuse of Sri Lankan children as a result of tourism,' he noted

UNICEF estimates that 2 million children globally are exploited in the multi-billion dollar commercial sex industry, which includes child sex tourism.

The most vulnerable children in Sri Lanka are those from poor and marginalized communities who have little supervision from their families. Children are lured into prostitution with money, clothes, pens, sweets, food and sometimes the chance to travel overseas.

Last year 549,000 foreign tourists visited Sri Lanka, with the figure projected to rise to 600,000 in the current year, and to I million by 2010

'A child who is a victim of sexual abuse may suffer serious, lifelong or even life-threatening consequences,' UNICEF Senior Programme Coordinator Dr. Yasmin Ali Haque said.

'As the first country in South Asia with a national plan of action to combat child sex tourism, Sri Lanka has a unique opportunity to lead the way for other countries in the region. UNICEF compliments Sri Lanka Tourist Board on this worthy initiative.'

Tigeress , worse of this kind is that those ministers suppose to work fot child welfare is using childs as servants at their home and distroying their future.

and the same ministers bluff about Tigers child soldiers.
Tigers do lookafter childs, if anyone visited Tiger control area knows how many childrens are looked after by tigers.

they are not on the street begging or in child prostitution , they all in anbu illam , thai illam and dozens more , they even baned the place called orphanage.

in sinhala area mostly those soldires childrens who end up in that 40,000.

Tigress,

I agree. However there is a difference in the approach to solve them.

Child soldiers abuse is initiated and inflicted by a small group of individuals on children in the name of liberation to achieve political and military ends. It can be stopped any time by the same individuals if they wish so.

Child labour is there due to social and economic circumstances. It will be not stopped by a few individuals. It will be stopped only through economic uplift.

i agree with you to a certain extent, child soldiers too can be stopped, if the grievances are addressed by the required party!! social and economy factor too contribute to the child recruitment. as far as i know the ltte do not have any child soldiers. when karuna was chased nearly 5000 children were released by the ltte.

you have to take the word of the ltte. no one escapes from vp, but karuna did, as we all know karuna was left on a long lead. vp did not know a lot about his activities.

anyway, the gosl has no right to cry for tamil children while there is more than 40000 child sex workers working to contribute to the lankan economic. if i have to feed myself on child sex money, i rather die than being a president!!
if we had 40000 child soldiers , we would have won the eelam by now.
i understand , once the social economic crisis sorted , the child sex trade might disappear, if not there will be a few who crave for money and sex like the ones kumari.(she says pleasure and money the same time)

to go by your theory, the war need to come to an end to sort the child sex trade in lanka's case.

what you say maninder?

Anyway here is something i wrote earliar
----------------------------------------------------

If the LTTE is putting kids in the FDL its wrong. no two words. But here is another angle regarding the kids under LTTE control. i wrote this in another thread.

this is not as black and white as you think. its a bit complicated. I think Gaja acca has been working in the east particularly after T sunami came by and has a bit more ground level knowledge.

there are orphanages run by the tigers because as they are the state its their duty. these are children who have lost parents to the war. some kids may opt to join the tigers and there is no denying it. you cant force a kid to join because his/her worth when forced is negated.

there are lots of articles from folks who travelled there. i give here two articles that i found when i did a quick search.

Sri Lanka Tourist Board (SLTB) Chairman Udaya Nanayakkara, is a known wife beater. He is said to have beaten both his previous wives on several occasions. Are we going to let him save the 40,000 kids who were prostituted to tourists? Tourists who came to Sri Lanka whilst Mr. Nanayakkara was Chairman? Forget GOSL. UNICEF should know better.
