TISSMAHARAMA:- Farmers organizations, in one voice, told President Mahinda Rajapakse that the country`s second International Airport should be built at Weerawila.
The President, visiting the historic Southern Province town of his home district on Friday (26), met the farmer community of the area at Debarawewa Maha Vidyalaya and asked them whether they would like to have the second International Airport at Weerawila, `Build the airport, build the airport,` they all answered in unison.
`I always listen to the people and my purpose for visiting you is to find out what you have to say. If you want it, I will have it built and if you don`t want it too I am prepared to locate it elsewhere,` he told the farmer community.
He said building a second International Airport was of high priority in his policy programme and if they didn`t want it there he would select another location like Hingurakgoda or Polonnaruwa. `Since you wish it to be built it here I will see that it is done,` the President said.

This would definitely benefit the farmers far down south as when they travel on holiday to the US or UK or any where they will not have to travel all the way to K'nayake!!
The farmers would also be able to use the airstrips for their Cessnas etc etc which they would be using for spraying crops etc etc and of course they could use the hangers to park their private Cessnas or lear jets etc etc. Indeed good idea by the government to benefit the farmers. That is what the farmers were missing all these years.
Also in most countries having a house or property near an airport would be the last thing anyone wants and such properties are low in value. Not so in SL! Having a house near an airport actually increases the value of such a house! Edited By - kiwikanga - 27 Feb 2006 23:27:22 GMT |

I remember when they had Gam Udava they used to bring a stationery full size model aircraft. You had to pay to get in to this model, you had your own seat allocated, had usual take-off drill, then tea was served and landing-drill. All these lasted about 15 mins.
All these for Rs. 25.00.
Now Weerawila can see real aircrafts. |

Hey Kiwi Mate,
I think your just making it a joke. Well I guess the president wanted to find out whether the farmers are happy with the relocation of their house and property. I guess pretty soon someone will realise how much commision the President and the Henchaiya's are going to earn and will go and turn few people against it. Then when their government comes they will try to implement the same project. Then Mahinda and the JVP clan will stop it.
But I think its a good idea they have a second airport in lanka. But I think it will be more sensible to build it in a place where they wont be building a expressway in the near future. Arent they going to build a CMB-GALLE Expressway?
Hang on I think I got the whole thing wrong. I think I misstook Weerawila to Koggala. Hmm Weerawila doesnt sound like a bad idea really. Wish you all the best Mr President. I really hop ethis is a realistic and good chintanaya of urs! |

ReyBeez, why do you think SL needs another International Airport?
Do you think:-
1. Katunayake is unable to handle the amount of air traffic that is coming in at the moment.( apx. 10 flights a day)
2. An absolute need is felt to have an international airport at Weerawila as that area is highly developed and the only thing lacking is an Int.AP.
Quite apart from an air port, Weerawila would be better off with a railway station and a train service to begin with.
This I would reckon is just an election gimmick with the LGE in view to fool the voters in the south to win over the JVP votes towards the PA.
The result of a similar disastrous venture is still seen at Kosgama where the abandoned massive ply-wood factory complex stands by the side of the High Level Road. How many have seen it? Testimony to economic blunders on shortsighted policies of the SLFP/MEP. Hope this too does not turn out to be one of those! Edited By - kiwikanga - 28 Feb 2006 05:13:57 GMT |

| Usually farmers and the environmentalists protest and govt try to get away with the project. Now the main problem is sorted, farmers agreed. Now what you need is to build the airport and get some airlines to fly in and out. From South to BIA through Colombo takes 4 to 5 hour journey. It is not convenient at all. Polanaruwa farmers were bit hesitant initially. They will see the benefit soon and the 3rd should go there. |

MR Launches Lankan Space Program and Solves Tiger Problem
by G.O.N. Harakkweera (AFP)
SL prez Mahinda Rajapakse has announced the construction of the country's first space shuttle.
In an attempt to compete with the beleagured NASA program and the rising Chinese program visionary president Mahinda announced the Lankan program at a betel chewing ceremony at Temple Trees.
He announced in his address to the assembled dignitaries, 'I had a dream. In that dream I realized how to solve the ethnic problem and restore our national greatness. I will ask Prabhakaran to pilot the shuttle with his Tigers on board. They can then set up Tamileelam on the moon. They will be the first outer space nation state and we will get all the glory.'
After his address a procession took place with a JVP artist produced cardboard replica of a space ship with Kandyan dancers and drummers in tow.
His Excellency has asked that this matter be brought up in the next round of talks with the LTTE. |
