Showers above 100 mm are likely at some places in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western and North-central provinces and in Galle, Matara and Mannar districts.
The Department of Meteorology issued a weather forecast for 09 May 2026 at 5:30 a.m. Misty weather may occur in parts of the Central, Sabaragamuwa, and Uva provinces, along with Kurunegala district during the morning hours. A low-level atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka will likely keep rainy weather going over the island for the next few days. Rain is expected in the Western, Southern, and Northern provinces in the morning, with widespread showers or thundershowers starting after 1:00 p.m. The public is urged to take safety measures to reduce risks from strong winds and lightning during these storms. Additionally, the heat index may reach ‘Caution level’ during the day in Sabaragamuwa, Northern, North-central, North-western, and Eastern provinces, as well as in Hambantota and Monaragala districts. A Warm Weather Advisory from the Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre was issued at 3:30 p.m. on 07 May 2026 and is effective for 08 May 2026. The heat index, which reflects how temperature feels to the body, is predicted to increase to ‘Caution level’ in the mentioned areas. This index is determined using relative humidity and maximum temperature, not predicting the maximum temperature itself. The advice regarding the heat index was prepared in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services. People are advised to stay hydrated, take breaks in shady areas, and look after the elderly and sick indoors. Outdoors, it is recommended to limit strenuous activities and wear light-colored clothing. For further information, please refer to the advisories from the Disaster Preparedness & Response Division, Ministry of Health, or call 011-7446491. The weather forecast for 08 May 2026 was also issued at 5:30 a.m. by the Department of Meteorology, indicating that the rain pattern will continue due to the ongoing atmospheric disturbance near Sri Lanka.
