Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has urged for the Strait of Hormuz to be reopened “as soon as possible” during discussions with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi. The two officials met in Beijing on Wednesday, marking Araqchi's first visit to China since the onset of the Iran war. Wang emphasized that achieving a lasting ceasefire is an “urgent priority” and stressed the importance of continuing negotiations. He also mentioned that Beijing is prepared to assist in reducing tensions. This meeting takes place just a week before a summit between US President Donald Trump and Chinese leader Xi Jinping, where they are expected to discuss the Iran war and the reopening of the strait. Wang stated, “China believes that achieving a comprehensive ceasefire is an urgent priority, while reopening hostilities would be even more undesirable.” He noted that the international community is concerned about restoring safe navigation through the Strait, and China hopes that involved parties will respond quickly to this call. Beijing has aimed to mediate in the conflict without becoming overly involved and has consistently encouraged the US and Iran to engage in talks, a point Wang reiterated on Wednesday. Additionally, Wang expressed appreciation for Iran’s commitment to refrain from developing nuclear weapons, according to Chinese state media. Araqchi responded by stating that the partnership between China and Iran will strengthen, as reported by Iranian state media.
