Food Security is vital to ensuring a Nation’s Sovereignty and National Security – Prime Minister
In her address, the Prime Minister praised the organizers for successfully hosting the event despite the challenges the country faces. She acknowledged the significant role young agripreneurs play in agriculture and the national economy. “I am pleased to see talented agri-entrepreneurs like you. Food security, which relies on agriculture, is vital for national security. Initiatives like 'Grow and Sell' greatly strengthen our production economy,” she stated. She pointed out that during the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing tensions in the Middle East, the lack of food security has made economies more fragile. She emphasized that even small decisions by leaders can affect supply chains. Additionally, she noted that climate change presents serious threats to agriculture, making conditions harder to predict. In this context, the contributions of agri-entrepreneurs are crucial, as they not only generate income but also enhance the nation’s food security and, in turn, its national security. The Prime Minister acknowledged that their skills and creativity benefit not just themselves, but the entire country. She also expressed her appreciation for the support from organizations like IFAD and SAPP and wished the best for the innovative youth of Sri Lanka. The event was attended by several notable figures, including Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Land and Irrigation K.D. Lalkantha; Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe; Secretary to the Ministry D.P. Wickramasinghe; Additional Secretary Lathisha Priyanthi; Director of SAPP Sunimal Chandrasiri; along with other esteemed guests.
