The Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Sri Lanka has introduced new rules for multi-day fishing trawlers that travel through Maldivian waters. Susantha Kahawatta, the Director General of the Department, explained that every multi-day fishing vessel must follow these guidelines when entering the Maldivian Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), whether they are going to the Arabian Sea for fishing or returning after their trips. It is important to note that vessels that enter Maldivian waters against the country's laws can be detained by local security forces. Additionally, Maldivian authorities may impose heavy fines for the release of such detained vessels. Kahawatta highlighted that the Department of Fisheries cannot help or represent these fishing vessels in legal issues. Therefore, all necessary applications must be properly filled out and sent to the designated email addresses at least 96 hours before entering Maldivian waters. The Director General also pointed out that vessel owners need to submit several documents, including the vessel's registration certificate, departure permit, crew details, a photo of the vessel, and a rough map showing the planned entry and exit points with their application. Kahawatta urged all vessel owners and fishermen to strictly follow these rules to prevent serious financial and operational losses due to violations.
