The Irrigation Department is calling on the public in Sri Lanka to conserve water due to the ongoing dry weather. L.S. Sooriyabandara, the Director of Irrigation (Hydrology & Disaster Management), mentioned that water levels in several major rivers are approximately 75%. He assured that there is enough water available for the current planting season. “Most major rivers are experiencing lower water levels. Nonetheless, out of the 73 reservoirs overseen by the Irrigation Department, many have surpassed 75% of their normal capacity. Hence, we can supply water for this season,” he explained. The Director also cautioned that there might be saltwater intrusion in areas where water is taken from rivers for drinking, especially in the Nilwala, Kelani, and Kalu rivers. Therefore, the public is advised to use water very carefully.
