Electricity prices will go up starting today. The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) has approved this increase after the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) asked for it for the second quarter of the year. The CEB requested a rise of 13.56%, but the PUCSL approved a smaller increase of about 10% overall. According to the new rates for domestic users announced by the PUCSL: For those using 0–30 units, prices will climb by 4.3%, which means an extra Rs. 15 on monthly bills. For the 31–60 units users, rates will increase by 6.9%, adding Rs. 45 to their monthly cost. People using 61–90 units will also see a 6.9% rise, leading to an extra Rs. 120 monthly. For the 91–120 units category, prices will go up by 7.2%, resulting in an increase of Rs. 420 each month. Lastly, for those consuming over 180 units, the tariffs will jump by 25.3%, which is the largest increase under this adjustment, as stated by the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka.
