Six police officers arrested for allegedly assaulting Catholic priest remanded
Six police officers have been taken into custody for allegedly beating a Catholic priest in Gampaha. They have been ordered to remain in custody until tomorrow, the 26th. The officers from the Gampaha Division Crimes Investigation Bureau were presented in Gampaha Magistrate’s Court today. The priest, who lives in Kotadeniyawa, was admitted to Negombo General Hospital on the 24th after claiming he was attacked. He stated that while riding his motorcycle last night to a religious service, a group of police officers on motorcycles assaulted him in Udugampola, Gampaha. In response to the incident, Rev. Jude Chrishantha Fernando and MP Kavinda Jayawardena from the Samagi Jana Balawegaya visited the priest at the hospital today to check on his condition. The Gampaha Police detained the six officers involved, which includes three sergeants and three constables.
