The UN Security Council called on Iran to stop its attacks on Gulf nations on Wednesday. This resolution did not mention the strikes by the US or Israel on Iran, which led Tehran’s ambassador to criticize it as a "blatant misuse" of the UN. The resolution was approved with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions. It demands that Iran immediately cease all attacks against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. Additionally, it condemns any threats or actions by Iran that could disrupt international shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. Iran has frequently targeted Gulf states in response to US-Israeli attacks that killed Iranian supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and have continued to hit Iranian sites. The Islamic Republic has also attacked commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, a vital waterway for global oil trade, aiming to harm the world economy. Jamal Fares Alrowaiei, Bahrain's UN ambassador, which proposed the resolution backed by 135 countries, stated that its approval highlights the Gulf's significant role in the global economy. He emphasized that securing this region is not just a local issue but a shared international responsibility that relates closely to global economic stability and energy security. Both China and Russia, which hold veto power, abstained from the vote, frustrated that the resolution did not address US-Israeli actions against Iran. Iranian ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani claimed that the adoption of this resolution was a "blatant misuse of the Security Council mandate" for the political goals of the United States and Israel.
