Five Iranian women s soccer players granted humanitarian visas in Australia
On Tuesday, Australia granted humanitarian visas to five players from the Iranian women's soccer team. They requested asylum due to fears of persecution in their home country. This decision followed a conversation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese regarding the team after news emerged that the players sought asylum. The other players are currently staying in a hotel on the Gold Coast. Albanese stated that support is available for the remaining players, but it is their choice to accept it. "Australians have been touched by the struggles of these courageous women," Albanese said during a press conference in Canberra on Tuesday. "They are safe here and should feel at home." The Iranian women's soccer team is in Australia for the Asian Cup tournament. According to Iran's semi-official Fars news agency, five players left the team hotel with the help of Australian police and sought assistance from the Australian government after "breaking free." Initially, Trump expressed on social media that Australia was "making a terrible humanitarian mistake" by allowing the team to return home but later stated that he had spoken with Albanese and praised him for managing this "rather delicate situation."
