No sides taken in Iranian vessel incident, Sri Lanka acting under international law- FM
Sri Lanka's Foreign Minister Vijitha Herath stated on Saturday that the government is addressing the recent incident involving an Iranian vessel according to international law and will not favor either side. While speaking at the Raisina Dialogue 2026 in New Delhi, he responded to inquiries about a U.S. operation against the Iranian vessel near Sri Lankan waters and whether the Iranian crew would be sent back to Iran. Herath did not provide a clear yes or no but emphasized that Sri Lanka is following the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS). He mentioned that the authorities are taking actions based on international law and humanitarian principles, reiterating that Sri Lanka will not take sides in this matter and will manage the situation under its legal obligations. During a session titled “Heart of the Seas: The Future of the Indian Ocean,” Herath underscored the increasing geopolitical importance of the Indian Ocean and called for stronger regional cooperation to ensure stability and security. He pointed out that maritime security and economic collaboration are essential for regional nations. Herath recognized the Indian Ocean Rim Association (IORA) for promoting cooperation among its members and enhancing regional engagement. He praised India's leadership within the organization, expressing faith in its capacity to push forward regional efforts. “India is doing an excellent job. The Indian presidency of IORA can significantly contribute because India possesses ample human and material resources as a large neighboring country. We hope that under India's presidency, we can play a significant role and we wish India every success,” he remarked.
