U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Thursday evening that he is rescinding an invitation for Prime Minister Mark Carney to join his "Board of Peace" project for Gaza. Trump introduced this new initiative during the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. The goal is to help rebuild Gaza, which has suffered from war, during a time of leadership change. So far, 35 countries have agreed to participate in the board, but Carney had not confirmed whether Canada would accept the invitation. The Prime Minister was not present at the launch in Davos because he was attending a cabinet retreat in Quebec City. On his Truth Social website, Trump stated that Carney is no longer invited. "Dear Prime Minister Carney: Please let this letter serve to inform you that the Board of Peace is withdrawing its invitation for Canada to join what will be the most distinguished Board of Leaders ever gathered," Trump wrote. CBC News has contacted the Prime Minister’s Office for a response. Some traditional U.S. allies have declined the invitation. While significant Middle Eastern nations like Israel, Turkey, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, and Qatar have signed up, European allies such as the U.K. and France have turned it down, with France expressing worries that some parts of the initiative clash with the UN charter.
