Sri Lanka's computer literacy rate has increased to 38.4 percent in the first half of 2025, according to a recent survey by the Department of Census and Statistics. The urban area had the highest rate at 52.1 percent, while the rural area followed with 36.6 percent, and the estate sector was at 18.6 percent. The survey indicated a slight gender difference, showing that 39.9 percent of males and 37.1 percent of females were computer literate during this period. Among all age groups, youth aged 15 to 19 had the highest literacy rate at 75.6 percent. The report also highlighted that higher education levels were linked to better digital skills, with individuals who had at least a General Certificate of Education Advanced Level showing a computer literacy rate of 78.6 percent. Additionally, the Department noted that those who were literate in English had higher computer literacy rates. In Sri Lanka, computer literacy is defined as the percentage of people aged 5 to 69 who can independently use a computer.
