Sri Lanka Police reported the seizure of 1,821 kilograms and 174 grams of heroin during raids conducted in 2025, according to Police Media Spokesman Assistant Superintendent of Police F. U. Wootler. He shared this information during a media briefing on drug operations held today, the 18th. ASP Wootler mentioned that permission has been granted to continue drug raids in 2026, overseen directly by the Inspector General of Police. He encouraged the public to report any information they may have regarding drugs. Citizens can call the emergency hotlines 1818, 118, or 119 to share any tips. During the briefing, ASP Wootler highlighted that the police seized 1,821 kg and 174 g of heroin, along with 17,189 kg of cannabis, 3,865 kg of crystal methamphetamine (ICE), and nearly four million narcotic pills in 2025. He confirmed that daily raids and search operations will continue into 2026, under the close supervision of the Inspector General of Police. There has been public interest regarding the fate of the seized heroin and other drugs. The Sri Lanka Police clarified that in 2024, 1,890 kg and 512 g of heroin, ICE, ketamine, and cocaine were sent to incineration facilities in Wanathawilluwa and Puttalam for destruction, supervised by judicial officers and officials from the Government Analyst’s Department and the National Dangerous Drugs Control Board. In 2025, 494 kg of heroin was also destroyed. Moreover, on January 2, 2026, an initial destruction of 171 kg of heroin took place in the Wanathawilluwa area.
