US committed atrocity, will bitterly regret - Iranian FM on attack on warship IRIS Dena in Indian Ocean
Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi accused the United States of an "atrocity" on Thursday after a US submarine sank the Iranian frigate IRIS Dena in the Indian Ocean near Sri Lanka. This was the first time Tehran acknowledged the sinking amid rising tensions with the US. Araghchi expressed his views on X, stating that "the US has committed an atrocity at sea, 2,000 miles from Iran." He warned, "The US will come to bitterly regret the precedent it has set." On Wednesday, a US submarine torpedoed and sank the Iranian warship in international waters off the coast of Sri Lanka. The IRIS Dena was returning from the Milan naval exercise, a training event organized by India. US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth confirmed the attack during a media briefing at the Pentagon, noting that it marked the first time a torpedo had sunk an enemy warship since World War II. According to the Associated Press, the Sri Lankan Navy reported that 87 bodies were recovered and 32 individuals were rescued after the sinking of the IRIS Dena. Hegseth remarked, "An American submarine sank an Iranian warship that believed it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was struck by a torpedo."
