The Cabinet of Ministers in Sri Lanka has approved a plan to hire more than 23,000 teachers for state services. This recruitment will support the education reforms that are being proposed, according to Cabinet Spokesman Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa. Back in December 2024, the Cabinet approved the formation of a committee led by the Prime Minister's Secretary. This committee was tasked with assessing the number of job vacancies in the state service and reviewing the recruitment process for government positions. After evaluating requests to fill these vacancies in various ministries and departments, the Cabinet has now agreed to recruit 26,095 people for state service. Of these, 23,344 will be teachers in the Sri Lanka Teachers’ Service. Additionally, the Cabinet has approved the hiring of 705 staff for the Ministry of Health and Mass Media, 452 for the Ministry of Justice and National Integration, 442 for the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Vocational Education, and 248 for the Ministry of Ports and Civil Aviation.
