The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a plan to keep providing a Rs. 6,000 allowance for each child to buy school stationery. This program started in 2025, allowing families that qualify for the Aswesuma allowance to receive Rs. 6,000 per child. It also supports students attending small schools with fewer than 300 students who do not participate in the Aswesuma Program but are eligible for the allowance. This includes lay and monastic students from Pirivena and Seelamatha monasteries, as well as children in schools within Child Development Centres. The Prime Minister, who is also the Minister of Education, Higher Education, and Professional Education, presented this proposal, which the Cabinet has now approved to continue the program into 2026.
